“This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24

Spring has sprung, the flowers are blooming, and the smell of fresh cut grass will soon fill the air!  These are a few things we all look forward to during this time of year.  However, we cannot lose sight of our educational priorities.

We are finishing up our study of 1 Kings in Bible class.  During this time we learned how God made Solomon a “wiser and more understanding man,” how he built the temple, and how he healed the widow's son.  This month we will begin to study 2 Thessalonians and Titus.  In 2 Thessalonians, we will learn how Paul writes to encourage persecuted believers, how he talks to the Thessalonians about being steadfast, how to work for a living, and finally, how he corrected a misunderstanding concerning the Lord's return.  In Titus, we will learn how we should instruct ourselves in faith, conduct, and how we need to watch out for false teachings.  We will also learn about Paul's future plans for Titus.

We just completed our study of artist Norman Rockwell and composer George Handel.  This month we will begin a study of artist Michelangelo and learn how he was a painter, sculptor, architect, and poet until his death at the age of ninety.  Our composer study for the month of April will be Franz Schubert.  We will discuss how he was a school teacher and how he produced more masterpieces in his lifetime than almost any composer in history until his death at the age of 31.

This month in science we finished our lesson of the earth.  We learned how God made it just the way it needed to be to support life.  We also started our study of the moon.  We learned the Latin word for moon, which is “luna.”  This concept is carried over to Mrs. Sweeney's Latin class  We will learn about the different phases of the moon and when those phases occur during the month.  We will also discuss Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon.

We had a wonderful time doing our “pizza” fraction math lesson.  What a great way for the children to learn about fractions!  We are continuing to learn about fractions and will make brownies for our next hands-on lesson.  A few students are learning multiplication using cuisenaire rods, while others are working with money and patterns.

In U.S. history we are reading, “How the French Founded a Colony in Florida,” from the book, This Country of Ours.  In world history we are reading about, “Canute and the Waves,” from the book, Our Island Story.

Our new recitation for April will be Psalm 121.

“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;

From where shall my help come?

My help comes from the Lord...”

While 5th through 12th grades took part in the C.A.T. testing in March, the younger students took a few field trips around the community.  On our first day we visited Clifty Falls State Park, Madison-Jefferson County Public Library, and took a walk along the Ohio River.  On the second day we went to Hanover Park where we enjoyed play time on the playground, took a walk, and drew in our nature journals.  Being able to get out and enjoy the beauty God has to offer was a great experience for the students.  We are in the process of planning a trip to the Louisville Zoo later this month or in early May.
